3 years ago, Simone Biles walked away from her Olympic dreams in the middle of the competition.
Though it was largely unexplained in the moment, she later said she'd developed a case of the "Twisties" - a dangerous condition where a gymnast feels disconnected from their body and doesn't know where the
floor is.
Many people praised her as a hero for prioritizing her health. Others condemned her for quitting and bailing on her team.
But when you're doing that crazy level of flips and turns, the "Twisties" can be deadly.
And this week, Simone Biles, the undisputed GOAT of women's gymnastics, led her team to a gold
medal. She'll probably earn several individual gold medals as well.
Simone's comeback shows us an important truth:
Despite what the "experts" say, it IS okay to quit.
- You SHOULD quit when your mental or physical health are at stake.
- You SHOULD quit when you're clearly on the wrong track.
- You SHOULD quit when you're overwhelmed,
burned out, and at risk of further harm.
But that doesn't mean you have to quit EVERYTHING.
SELECTIVE QUITTING is essential.
In fact, the most successful people quit often!
- They quit using systems that aren't working for them.
- They quit wasting their precious time on things they could easily
outsource.
- They quit activities they thought would "work" or bring them joy but don't.
Quitting doesn't have to be a sign of failure. It also a sign of realignment.
And as Simone Biles proved this week, quitting doesn't have to be forever.
Sometimes quitting lets you come back better, stronger,
and more resilient.
