Hey beautiful!
Have you ever discovered a long-held belief wasn't accurate, and the TRUTH made all the difference?
In high school I read a self-help book that said, "Be thankful for all circumstances. The traffic jam that made you late for work might have saved you from a
fatal crash, and you'd never know."
Well now...
I've long made gratitude a part of my life, but I was NOT gonna be grateful that certain really sucky things happened (death of a loved one, major trauma, etc). No way.
Years later, I learned the truth about that sentiment. The idea actually comes from the Bible, which encourages us to be thankful "in all circumstances."
IN.
Not FOR.
That little tiny word makes all the difference.
No matter what you're going through
in life, you can find SOMETHING to be grateful for.
My best friend and I have a long-standing practice of telling each other one "super awesome thing" that happened in our day.
Not gonna lie - sometimes we have to dig DEEP to find it.
Sometimes it's a quite ordinary thing that we claim as "super awesome" in
comparison to lots of sucky going on.
But you know what? That practice shifts our focus.
We can acknowledge the legitimately sucky things (NO toxic positivity here) AND remember that there is good in our lives as well.
How can you put that habit into practice?
Do you keep a gratitude journal or list? Text a friend your good news?
Gratitude isn't just for November, when Thanksgiving is on our minds (at least if you're in the U.S.)
It's for all day. Every day.
IN all circumstances, not FOR.
