It's been a busy week over here. My friend's sister passed away suddenly, and my husband and I watched her 2 little girls for a few
days while she went to the funeral in another state. So we had 4 kids under 10 running around the house, 3 girls and one boy! Woowee!, it was crazy!
I'm so grateful for my business that allows me to work at home, and the flexibility of homeschool so my kids and I could help my friend in her time of need.
I'm always thinking
about my kids' self-esteem. Modern culture has it so messed up, with every soccer player getting a trophy even when they come in last place in the league. Games where no one keeps score so you don't hurt a kid's supposedly fragile self-esteem. Well, hellooooo?! it's only fragile because we never give them a chance to prove their mettle. To fail and try again and realize how tough they are. To understand that their worth is not dependent on their
performance.
Before I get too much on my soapbox here, I wanted to send you the follow up to the Snow White blog I told you about in my last email. I know I kinda bashed Snow White as a spineless, helpless victim. So I wrote a post about our favorite books about strong girls.

From the time my daughter was born, I thought about ways to foster her sense of self-worth. She loves reading, and was very into the princess stories, like most little girls. But I worried about the implicit messages of helplessness that many
of these stories teach (Read my previous post about this topic). These stories are so much a part of our culture, I didn't want her to miss out on them completely, Plus, truth be told, they're not all bad. I hope she
wants to get married someday, and I hope she finds a man who treats her, in some ways, like a cherished princess. But I didn't want that to be all we read, either. So I made it a point to also read her lots of books about strong girls - books that would boost her self-esteem and help her be more confident.
