I have to admit, , I'm riled up!
I see so much B.S. coaching advice regarding trauma and self-esteem, mostly from people who have no clue how to deal with it. Business coaches
who want to have all the answers, so they give half-baked advice that only works on a surface level because it doesn't address the real issues.
Other coaches who exploit people's low self-worth and traumatic experiences - without giving any real solutions - to get them to sign up for their (completely unrelated) programs.
It makes me
furious.
And when big-name celebrity coaches who should know better come out and bash women's attempts to heal and change society, it's inexcusable.
At his most recent Unleash Your Power event,Tony Robbins said that many women use the #metoo movement as an excuse to stay in victimhood. A woman challenged him on his views, and they went back on forth for a while. I
read an article about it, and at first I didn't think too much of it. He's entitled to his opinion.
But then I watched the video.
And I was appalled.
It seems the king of personal power sees victimhood in the #metoo movement rather than what it is: a vehicle for many, many women to take back their
power, sometimes for the first time ever.
In his exchange with the woman who challenged him, Tony Robbins basically says, "Resistance doesn't make you safer; it only makes the other person angry." As someone who's survived and learned to thrive after years of sexual, emotional, and verbal abuse, his comments are inexcusable. He basically told her to shut up and don't make waves, because it
will anger people.
This is the exact threat that keeps so many women silent and suffering. The threat that allows sexual assault and other forms of abuse to continue unchecked.
Silence breeds shame. To heal, we need to share our stories. And to create lasting change in the world, we need to raise awareness of just how pervasive sexual assault really is.
You know me, and you know I firmly believe you can't simply
sweep trauma or other negative events under the rug and expect it to go away. You have to deal with it.
You have to heal your past: stare your trauma in the face, acknowledge how it affected you, and learn to turn that pain into power. You have to remove the mask: chip away all the beliefs that falsely define you and rediscover the heart and soul of who you are.
