Hey, beautiful!
They say you can never be too rich or too thin. But can you be too positive?
A positive mindset is essential for your mental and emotional well being, and even your physical health. It's necessary for healing of all types. It's an essential tool for resilience during the tough times - and goodness knows we've had enough of THOSE in 2020!
But can you have too much of a good thing? Can you ever be TOO positive?
This idea crops up periodically in entrepreneur groups I'm a part of. Recently, someone asked if it could be harmful to FORCE yourself to think positively.
The responses were interesting. Many people said things like, "Positivity is never bad!" "A positive mindset is everything!" "I refuse to think about what I don't want to bring about! Good vibes only!"
I. Don't. Agree.
Yes, a positive mindset, in general, can make the difference between weathering a storm and coming out stronger, or being crushed by it.
But there's a difference between looking for the silver lining and denying reality.
If you refuse to take shelter in the midst of a Cat 5 hurricane because "everything will be all right," you'll probably end up injured - or dead.
You can acknowledge the very real "suck" in your life while STILL keeping a generally positive outlook. Seeing the good AND the bad. The pain AND the triumph.
It's called having sober judgement, and it's a crucial step I teach my clients when they want the confidence to be themselves in their life and business.
Denying reality leads to imposter syndrome. The pursuit of perfectionism. Wearing a mask to hide your flaws. (You still KNOW they're there, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself otherwise...)
It erodes your confidence.
Sober judgement BUILDS your confidence because it allows you to be real. To stop hiding and pretending to be something you're not.
It takes courage to face the flaws and love yourself anyway. But you can't have TRUE confidence without it.
