You’ve put a lot of work into defining your ideal clients.
You’ve defined their demographics. You know what they do for a living, how many kids they have, and how much money they make. You know their pain points and their needs and the things they keep them up at night.
But there's a REASON your clients still annoy you, even though they check all the right demographic boxes. There's a reason you're still taking on work that doesn't light you up – chasing the money rather than chasing your dream.
Now, some people like to complain about everything, and there’s little you can do to make them happy, no matter how hard you try. As long as you’re dealing with PEOPLE, you’ll have SOME sucky clients. That’s not what I’m talking about.
I’m talking about those “perfectly good” clients who check all the right boxes but annoy you anyway. The clients who pay you well – and on time – but you don’t like working with them (or you don’t like the work you do FOR them.)
For most of my clients, it boils down to one (or more) of four things.
Today, we’re talking about Reason #1 you have sucky clients.
Sucky Clients Root Cause #1 - Believing lies.
Maybe you’ve been told that the REAL work you want to do – with the people you REALLY want to work with – won’t make you money. That you have to do xyz or teach xyz to be successful.
When I started my business, I was told that people will never buy a program to help them love themselves, improve their confidence, and know their worth; that all they care about is making money. These advisors had been in business longer than me, so I believed them. So I changed by tagline to “Know your
self-worth; grow your net worth.” Catchy, but disingenuous. I sounded like a money coach (I’m not), and I was miserable (and broke).
Thankfully, I called b.s. on that lie. Money IS important. But all the money in the world can’t make you love yourself. Can’t help you BE yourself. THAT freedom is worth more than any money you could ever earn. (Money is a great BY-PRODUCT of having confidence and being yourself. But money is not the cure.)
I had to take a stand for MY mission and MY message to truly flourish in my business.
